The Suitcase Speakers
To be honest, this was not a project born of my own creativity. My husband and I were walking through a flea market one day and came across these old suitcases that were transformed into speakers and being sold for a hefty price tag. We loved them but weren’t about to pay $350 each! Instead, my husband looked at me and said “We can totally do that.” I had no idea his tech knowledge covered this kind of thing. But this line is literally music to my DIYer ears in this case.
It turns out that once you start looking, these old suitcases pop up at just about every resale store or flea market ever. The key was finding the right sizes and something in best possible condition. We quickly found 2 that fit the standards and were less than $20. Then my husband ordered the necessary tech components and we were ready make the transformation. We traced the speakers and panel in the proper spots and started cutting. On the inside we cushioned the amp so that it would be protected and would minimize reverb from the speakers.
After making sure everything was connected in the right places, it was time to put it to the test. Either it would blare out rock music, or we’d be lost in silence. Fortunately, the speakers worked wonders on the first try!
At the end of the day we were able to complete 2 speakers for about $130 total. They made fantastic Christmas gifts for Joe’s sister and parents who have an appreciation for older items like I do, and of course, music. Perfect combination.
